Tools For Teens HAPPINESS AND HEALTHY MINDSET , A Journey into Myself, Two- day program: (Talk and six 90min workshops)
Tools for Teens - HAPPINESS AND HEALTHY MINDSET aims to give all Year 12 to Year 13 students a toolbox of practical, and easy-to-implement mindset techniques via an introductory talk, followed up by engaging, fun and thought-provoking interactive workshops.
INSPIRATIONAL TALK : ’Happiness, and tools for a healthy mindset in times of stress´
This is an inspirational talk to invite students to rethink concepts such as happiness, success, failure, pain and opportunity; and to give them tangible tools to support themselves through emotional rollercoasters, as well as minimizing the potential stress in the lead-up to NCEA internals and exams.
- What is happiness?
- The power of being present - the distraction of social media
- Reset and reframe: positive self-talk and constructive visualization
- Choosing happiness - choosing our narrative
- Challenging the victim mindset.
- Tangible tools to use to improve their mental health in times of low mood or stress.
The talk is to be held in the hall for all senior students in the morning at Assembly. After the talk students break off into workshops in smaller groups for the workshop:
WORKSHOPS: A Jouney into Myself
These 90-min workshops are meant to deepen the understanding of themes touched upon in the talk. These will be given in a safe, structured but informal manner, in a spacious room (drama room/library/hall), and will include fun interactive, physical team-building and trust exercises, as well as a goal-setting session with help of a handout.
The workshops are in 3 parts, each building on the one before, and run without a break: the first 30 minutes are centered around movement, trust, team-building, fight or flight ("reptilian" fight-flight-freeze brain); the second are focussed on discovering the link between our physiology and our emotions (limbic/emotional "mammal" brain) and the third is about goal-setting and discovering stengths, values and beliefs (neo-cortex, rational "human" brain)
Students will be given colourful , inspiring handouts to work from, and will leave the session with a toolbox of practical and easy-to-implement mindset techniques.
This program is aimed at the full year 12&13 classes, regardless of their abilities, gender, and their cultural or socio-economic backgrounds. Stress, anxiety, and overload can affect anyone, and for the concepts to be widely accepted and trust to be formed among students, it is important that no particular cohort of students is singled out.

FOR TOOLS FOR TEENS
Testimonial
“Jill Griffin’s Tools for Teens is
brilliant!
We held a Year 13 Wellbeing Day to help alleviate the numerous pressures facing our students in their unique final year of school.
We wanted an interactive programme delivered by an expert to provide our students with a variety of strategies to add to their kete in order to have greater personal success in Year 13 and beyond.
Jill delivered this programme
in an engaging and empathetic manner. Furthermore, her genuine passion for helping all types of teenagers was clear to see. The content is thought-provoking,
strengths-based and approached wellbeing from a variety of perspectives. This combination enabled our students to be excited, inspired and become more confident moving forward in what awaits them.
Jill was extremely well organised
and tailored her programme to meet the specific needs of our diverse range of students. We will continue working with Jill and Tools for Teens to empower our taiohi, especially with today’s demanding world in front of them.”
Phil Mechen, Year 13 Dean, Whangarei
Girls’ High School
“Jill gave a wide ranging talk about wellbeing, mindset and happiness to a group of year 11 to 13 Geraldine High School students in the run up to their School and NCEA Exams. She was extremely well prepared and spoke with passion and expertise about these wide ranging topics. She blended neuroscience with modern wellbeing thinking in a way that kept the students attention throughout her talk. The use of practical mindfulness tips, not only maintained the students interest, but also gave them something tangible to walk away from the session. She followed up the talk with great resources for students to refer back to as they reflected on the talk. In the future we would have Jill back to talk to our students for longer sessions on any of these topics as part of our Personal and Social Education Programme.”
Mr Richard Harvey
Assistant Principal, Geraldine High School
"The tools for teens workshop was such a perfect breakaway for our year 13 class. Jill was so open to conversation with us and spoke on very relevant topics that we go through as youth and high school students under all of our stress affecting our mental health and overall wellbeing. The workshop was balanced out perfectly with a good amount of talking and valuable points that were very eye opening to us students... as well as practical activity making the workshop really fun for us to participate in. It really made our year 13 group relate and connect over the things like what we are going through, what we are doing when we leave school, and how we find our happiness in all our uniquely different ways. Overall, it really set us up to start thinking about what we can do to not only be happy but REMAIN happy and Jill reassured us that it is possible for us to do so. "
